Context
The Madre de Dios region of the Amazon rainforest is known to be one of Peru’s most biodiverse areas, harbouring four endangered tree species and eleven endangered wildlife species. However, this incredible biodiversity is at risk due to increasing deforestation in the area.
Recent satellite images show that carbon emissions from deforestation in the Madre de Dios rose dramatically by over 60% between 2006 and 2010. The Peruvian Government’s report on annual forest loss has documented that rates of forest loss in this area have been steadily rising since 2001, with 2017 having the second highest level of deforestation in all of Peru.
This problem is particularly concerning due to the fact that large-scale deforestation can deplete a region of its natural resources and drastically reduce its biodiversity. Furthermore, it significantly increases atmospheric CO2 levels, contributing further to global climate change. Consequently, it is essential for immediate steps to be taken to protect the Madre de Dios region from further destruction and safeguard its unique ecological richness for generations to come.
Project
The Madre de Dios Amazon REDD+ Project is a bold initiative to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in the Madre de Dios region of Peru. This project covers an area of 98,932 hectares of tropical rainforest, which is under threat due to the construction of a trans-Amazonian inter-oceanic road – connecting Brazil to Peruvian ports – that has been predicted to facilitate the immigration of new settlers who are likely to engage in agricultural and livestock activities, leading to deforestation and further destruction of the environment.
The main goals of this climate project are twofold:
- firstly, to reduce pressure from land conversion for agricultural and cattle ranching purposes;
- secondly, to guarantee sustainable forestry management of the two timber concessions operating in the area.
Through these efforts, the carbon stocks found within this region will be protected from potential damage – preventing 659,793 tonnes of CO2e from entering the atmosphere each year. Not only will this help mitigate environmental destruction, but it will also contribute towards sustainable development among local indigenous communities living in the area.
Pachama has taken additional monitoring measures – a technology company specialising in machine learning, satellite imagery and LiDAR – who actively report to the project developer and certifier to further verify reported carbon reductions. In addition, alternative sources of livelihood are being created, as well as increased local employment opportunities and technical training courses for young people within these communities.
The Madre de Dios Amazon REDD+ Project is, therefore, something truly remarkable when one considers its noble aim to protect valuable carbon stocks and provide much-needed support for some of Peru’s most vulnerable inhabitants. By investing funds into protecting this rainforest, Peru can reap social and environmental rewards for generations down the line.
